Alma Con
A Historical Repeat on a Galactic Scale | Part 1
The history of Science Fiction has been marked by Robots. In the 1920s, during the formative years of Sci Fi, the Czech playwright Capek wrote the play, RUR and coined the term, “robot”. Since then robots have been the bellwether of SciFi. Every great SciFi film beginning with The Forbidden Planet had a robot as a major character. Robbie the Robot made his debut in The Forbidden Planet. He was followed by Hal in 2001, A Space Odyssey and now our game Rise Up! has KYLE.
Each of these robots had a fatal flaw, Robbie was destined for great adventures, but was denied this future and became a menial servant of the traditional deranged “mad” scientist. HAL of 2001, A Space Odyssey had a problem with his code, he confused carbon based humans, whom he was supposed to protect, with being an infestation to the spacecraft and therefore had to be eliminated. Finally, we have KYLE, the benevolent, kindly grandfather of a robot.
Kyle’s name is derived from his mission and purpose of existing. K.Y.L.E, his formal name, stands for Kinetic, Yarns, LiDAR, and Emotion. These are the primary combination of components, making Kyle unique and emotionally friendly for humans. Kinetic refers to the ability to move. Kyle has the unique ability to move from the blue light on the wall overseeing human endeavor to walking amongst the humans. While Yarns expresses his Nano wiring making it possible to be omnipresent and Hal – like. LiDAR refers to Kyle’s use of lasers to determine targeting sensory awareness and part of his Human emotional awareness. LiDAR allows Kyle to “target” and determine how close he can stand to a human without the human becoming emotionally uncomfortable. Finally, EMOTION simply is Kyle’s AI capabilities to appropriately respond to humans.
Kyle has three primary prerogatives: lead human/robot interface, execute the primary host protocol for Alma Con, and execute the orders of the primary officers of Alma Con. Kyle is also equipped with the ability to situationally self-program depending on the threat of the situation. The one mystery about Kyle, engineers have not been able to replicate, is the selective empathy Kyle has towards a few humans. There is sporadic human documentation of these behaviors, however the documentation cannot be reliable as it has never been recorded in the primary robot overseer computer system (ROCS).
These selected human affinity behaviors could be nothing more than the synchronized movements similar to the marketing videos from the 21st century robotics pioneer company, Boston Dynamics. Whether these behaviors were a new level of robot/human empathy or a preprogrammed event, the only thing we do know is Kyle is the only one who knows why he did what he did!
